The Sorting Wizard
Welcome to the Sorting Wizard!
Spellbindingly Quick and Easy Sorting, Perfectly Matched!

What is the Sorting Wizard?
"The Sorting Wizard" is an innovative web application designed to assist educators, facilitators or co-ordinators efficiently organize and sort individuals into similar groups or classes based on predefined constraints and personal preferences.
Organizers can enter key details such as names, genders and abilities, along with custom specific requests such as who an individual should (or should not) be put with in the same group or class. The Sorting Wizard will validate and processes this information, ensuring even and equal group formations while providing visual feedback and detailed summaries of the results.
The application is free to use and features an intuitive and user-friendly interface for seamless management and analysis of group assignments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here you'll find a list of commonly asked questions about the Sorting Wizard.
Please contact us if you have a question that isn't listed.
How do you manage my data?
The Sorting Wizard does not retain any data. While information is sent to our server for processing and sorting, it is never saved or captured on our systems.
What about when data is sent to and from a server?
The Sorting Wizard utilises HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure), which encrypts data during transit to and from a server allowing it to be read by only the server and the device from which it was originally sent.
Why shouldn't I just use AI for this task?
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a powerful tool which is becoming increasingly mainstream and more widely adopted. While entering data to sort into an AI engine might yield useful results, your data may be stored, analyzed, or even shared, which could raise concerns about privacy and security.
We believe the Sorting Wizard is a better tool because not only does it provide an easier method for data entry and superior presentation of the results, but even more importantly your data is not stored when using it.
Does the Sorting Wizard work on a mobile device?
By nature the Sorting Wizard involves working with data, much like using a spreadsheet and is therefore not designed to work on a mobile device.
Why can I not achieve a perfect sort?
A 'perfect' sort is not always possible and depends entirely on the data and sort criteria provided. For example, if Person A wants to be in the same class or grouping as Person B, but Person B prefers not to be with Person A, an unresolvable situation arises where both requests cannot be met. Often, these relationships manifest in 'chains' involving a number of people which may not be easy to detect. Use the 'Analyse Data' tool which will provide a summary of issues likely to impact the success of your sort.
Is there anything I can do to improve my sort?
The Sorting Wizard attempts to create evenly distributed classes based on the data provided while adhering to specific rules. The more evenly distributed the data is to begin with, for example an overall equal numbers of males and females, the higher the likelihood of a balanced sort. Furthermore, having more 'Put Withs' and 'Do Not Put Withs' decreases the flexibility around how individuals are put into groups.
I don't like the results. What can I do?
Simply run the sort again! Sorting uses randomness wherever possible to ensure the results are different each time.
If your results are continually disappointing, look at the data to see if there is any way you can 'flatten' it by providing better
balanced numbers - for example putting 5 'Ability 1' people into 4 classes will result in one of those classes having 2 'Ability 1'
people.
What do the 'Abilities' represent?
Anything you need them to! For example you may decide to classify your people into experience levels: 1 may represent junior while 3 represents senior. Teachers are more likely to use educational ability or achievement - whether 1 is higher or lower is up to you.
How does the sorting algorithm work?
Sorry - a good magician never reveals their secrets!
I preferred an earlier set of results. Can I go back to them?
Unfortunately not, because as described earlier the Sorting Wizard does not store data or results. Please save any results that you want to keep before running another sort or leaving the Sorting Wizard.
Why do you have to show adverts?
It is our intention for the Sorting Wizard to be a free resource, benefiting individuals who need to work out classes or groupings. Displaying adverts helps to maintain the hosting, development and numerous other costs required to keep the Sorting Wizard online.
Where is your annoying Cookie Policy pop-up?
The Sorting Wizard has eaten too many cookies recently and to avoid temptation has decided not to include them within this site!
